About 2 years ago, I had just finished high school and needed a break from the books before continuing with my education. Kosan Crisplant (part of MAKEEN Energy, ed.) was looking for an office assistant to help out in the reception, assist with printing and documentation and handle various tasks at the office – and I applied and got the job.

From the beginning, this job was on a temporary basis and I was planning on returning to school afterwards. I just had to figure out what kind of education I would go for. But actually, I got a quite good idea of that from the very beginning too. As a new employee, you are introduced to all the different departments, and sourcing, planning and shipping immediately caught my attention and interest – and this where I am now as a logistics apprentice.

What do you do in your apprenticeship?

As a logistics apprentice, I get to know every part of the sourcing, planning and shipping department – and I love that! It also includes tasks at the warehouse, so I really get a good idea of the workflows and how everything and everyone depends on each other.

The apprenticeship lasts 2 years, and we’ve divided it into 2 main sections. In the first year, I’ll mainly be focusing on sourcing, while the second year will be dedicated to planning and shipping.

Now and again, I will spend a few weeks at school to get a more theoretical perspective on things. Together with the school, my mentor and I have also made a student plan to make sure that I get to learn and work with everything relevant to a logistics apprentice.

What is it like to be an apprentice at MAKEEN Energy?

Already from day 1, I have felt like a part of the department. The others listen to my ideas and input, and I get my own tasks and responsibilities. That means the world to me! I’m not so good at having my nose in a book, so I definitely learn best by doing.

We are 2 logistics apprentices in the department, and that just adds a second learning loop to it. When you’re a second-year apprentice, you must help and teach the first-year apprentice. Right now, I’m the newest one, but I already look forward to trying to pass on some of my learnings when I’ll be the experienced one.

What is the best thing about your apprenticeship – and the most challenging?

The best part of my apprenticeship is without a doubt the many different tasks. In the sourcing, planning and shipping department, we handle so many things, and I have so much to try and learn. But at the same time, that is also one of the biggest challenges. With the many projects, you really need to keep your head cool and create an overview of all of it – and that’s not easy.

Another good thing – less technical but more social I guess – is what I learn from being part of this department. We have a policy about clear communication. If you want help, you just need to say it out loud, because no one can read your mind. And I like that. It gives some peace of mind to know that my colleagues speak out instead of keeping things to themselves.

What comes after your apprenticeship?

I’ve only just started as an apprentice, but I definitely know that I want to keep working in an international company. I like to work with so many different people from so many different places, because I learn so much from it. And as bonus, I get to practice my English too, and that will always be a good thing.
