Sustainable Oceans

The Sustainable Oceans Principle

As one of the first companies in the world, MAKEEN Energy signed the Sustainable Ocean Principles in October 2019. This United Nations initiative builds upon and supplements the UN Global Compact, and it recognises the urgency and global importance of a healthy ocean.

As a signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Ocean Principles, MAKEEN Energy will take action to promote the well-being of the ocean for current and future generations.

We are convinced that we can take part in making a positive difference for our ocean, and especially our solutions for liquefied natural gas (LNG) as well as our plastic conversion facility (known by the name Plaston) have great potential for having a positive impact.

Focusing our ocean efforts

To focus our efforts, we have chosen to work dedicatedly with particularly 2 of the initiative's 9 principles. Specifically, we will dedicate our attention to principles 2 and 3 that both address the issue of ocean health and productivity. Whereas principle 2 is about promoting or contributing to restoring, protecting or maintaining a healthy ocean, principle 3 pays attention to preventing pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions that can affect the ocean.

Joining project MAELSTROM

As our ability to chemically recycle plastic waste is scaled up, so are our responsible ambitions. Having signed the Sustainable Oceans Principle, it is only natural for us to join the EU-funded project MAELSTROM as a key partner. The project brings together key stakeholders in the pursuit of removing and reusing marine plastic litter from the coasts of Europe in a sustainable manner.
